Quiet please! Strings and saxophones in the library

Do you really have to be as quiet as a mouse in a library? Maybe. But on Saturday February 14, the Footscray Library put the silent treatment to one side as members of the Inner West Symphony Orchestra formed two smaller ensembles — a string quartet and the saxophone quartet — for a short musical soirée in the library’s homely courtyard, supporting Maribyrnong City Council’s innovative Creative West project.

Aiming to foster community connection, creativity and economic growth in the area, Creative West is a proposed landmark cultural precinct to be located in the heart of Footscray, which would include a world-class library, a performing arts venue and a green town park. Now that’s worth supporting!

So, together with members of the Hyde Street Youth Band and a troupe of colourful dancers and performers, the IWSO’s chamber groups provided two short brackets of music for an enthusiastic and eager audience. The council values the promotion of arts in the Western Suburbs, and members of the Inner West Symphony Orchestra are always keen to play for a good cause. Look out for more short performances by the versatile members of the IWSO in the future.
