Meet the Musicians

Andrew Leach

Conductor

A conductor, trombonist and pianist with extensive experience in the Melbourne music scene, Andrew is thrilled to be leading the Inner West Symphony Orchestra through its developmental stage.

Having held roles as Head of Brass and Director of Music and Performing Arts at Westbourne Grammar School, Andrew has formed a deep commitment to helping young and mature artists develop and hone their musical skills by fostering a collaborative and inclusive environment. He has developed a strong understanding of styles and techniques to bring a unique perspective to his work in both education and performance.

Andrew’s broad experience in the orchestral, big band and commercial music industry has also seen him tour country-wide and internationally, as well as musically directing over 30 theatrical productions in educational, independent and professional settings.

Michael Potts 

Assistant Conductor

Michael started his musical journey in Brisbane, learning piano from the age of 10 and later, the trombone. Michael has performed as bass trombonist with the Queensland Symphony, Melbourne Symphony and New Zealand Symphony orchestras. He has also performed, toured and recorded with countless big bands, chamber groups and scratch orchestras. Since 2008, he has been bass trombonist with the Air Force Band in Melbourne.

Michael began his conducting career at St Joseph’s College, Nudgee, and is currently Assistant Musical Director of the Westgate Concert Band.

Michael Patton

Concertmaster

Born in England, Michael started playing the violin at the age of four and went on to receive an honours degree in music from the University of Birmingham before completing a Postgraduate Certificate in Education at Reading University. During this time he received training from a variety of world-renowned musicians in all aspects of the violin and orchestral musicianship. Since moving to Melbourne, Michael has worked with many amateur and professional orchestras, including the Victorian Youth Symphony Orchestra, the Australasian Orchestra and Synthony.


The Inner West Symphony Orchestra is a lively blend of talent, with members ranging in age from 16 to their 70s! This diverse group brings together fresh perspectives and seasoned expertise, creating a unique musical chemistry that makes each performance special. Our players come from all walks of life, united by their love of music and community. Whether it’s a young cellist bringing new energy or a seasoned bassoonist adding rich depth, they each contribute to the vibrant sound that defines our orchestra.
